Bottom line: Find a reputable lfs and the return policy should not be an issue. If the fish dies, you can at least get a store credit towards another purchase. Some stores will even let you purchase a fish and leave it in the store for a waiting period to insure that it is healthy. I have seen lots of places like Petco and even good LFS selling camels as peppermints and thats a no no. Just be careful you are getting real peppermints and not camel shrimp. They will scavenge fish waste, algae, and detritus that have been deposited on the live rock and substrate. My peppermint is a sissy and also gets bullied by my skunk cleaner on a regular basis. I have 2 reputable stores to buy from and have not suffered a loss of either fish or coral since then (knock on wood). The Red Tip Hermit Crab is an ideal addition to any saltwater aquarium. While they do not refuse to sell new arrivals, they recommend waiting a period of time before buying them. These little guys spend their day shaking their colorful tails while hiding. Sexy Dancer Shrimp is the perfect candidate for a nano tank. One of the stores near me treats all fish that come in with copper and places an arrival date on new fish. Lesson learned: Buy nothing live from Petco (not to mention adding inhabitants one at a time, rookie mistake). I went back to the store and got a sample of their water and the salinity was 1.018, but I waited 4 weeks anyway after this purchase to insure no parasites were in my tank! Since then, I've watched their tanks and fish in them have had ick and a myriad of other problems. Luckily, the skunk cleaner survived and is healthy. I purchased 2 fish and a skunk cleaner from a single Petco tank and both fish died within 48 hours. While some will say a Petco near them is reliable, my first (and LAST) marine fish experience was with Petco.
